Modern Astronomy Continuing Education Courses

For many years, staff of the Sydney Institute for Astronomy within the School of Physics at the University of Sydney have been active in the presentation of Astronomy courses to the general public through the University's Continuing Education Program.

Latest Courses

 

The four main Modern Astronomy courses form a sequence over two years with the following titles:

  • Modern Astronomy - Voyage to the Planets
    A look at the solar system in the era of space exploration.
    Starts 17 March 2009
  • An Introduction to Astronomy - Stars and Galaxies
    Introduction to Stars, galaxies, the universe as a whole.
    Starts 16 September 2009
  • Modern Astronomy - The Lives of the Stars
    A more detailed look at the birth, life and death of stars.
    Expected to run in March 2010
  • Topics in Modern Astronomy
    Astronomers talk about their own research.
    Expected to run in September 2010

Location: School of Physics Building

Length: 10 meetings

Each course features an evening of star- and planet-viewing in the Blue Mountains is included.

As part of the 2009 International Year of Astronomy, we are running a series of extra courses:

  • The life (and death) of Galileo
    Saturday 2 May all day

  • Cosmos: a brief history (from the scientific revolution to the enlightenment)
    Saturday 6 June all day

  • Introduction to Modern Cosmology
    2 hours session, one night a week for 6 Weeks beginning Tuesday 7 July (excl. 21 July)

  • The search for extra-terrestrial life
    A one day Saturday workshop in October
    organised by Lucyna Kedziora-Chudczer
  • Beyond the Dish: an astronomical tour
    Thursday 19-Sunday 22 November
