General - Why does it take so long to load up your webpages?

Because our website are targeted at an audience who are mainly from the field of education, research institute and corporate companies, we assume that most of them have access to broadband internet connections. So our webpages are generally larger (~150kb) in size than most common webpages (~50kb). If you are using a low bandwidth internet connections (56k), it might take about a minute for each page to load.

Combatibility - Why can't I open some pages on your website?

In theory, if you have a relatively new computer with relatively new browser software installed on it, you should not encounter any problem with our website. But of course that is only in theory.
Our website has been written to work in Netscape Navigator 4.0 and later, and in Internet Explorer 4.0 and later. But some of our webpages may require other software and plug-ins for it to be visible. See below in Which software and plug-in do I need to install? section for more details
And if the problem is really due to a broken link or error, please send an e-mail to our web administrator. If you are reporting an error, please let me know your browser version and operating system, along with the URL of the page you just came from as well as the URL of the page with the actual problem. The more details you can provide, the higher chance we can track down the problem and get it fixed. We will act as quickly as possible.

Combatibility - Which software and plug-in do I need to install?

Macromedia Flash Player is a free web player that lets you view animated and interactive websites, movies and other web content created using Macromedia Flash.
Macromedia Shockwave Player is a free web player that lets you view animated and interactive websites, movies and other web content created using Macromedia Director Shockwave Studio.
Windows Media Player, RealOneplayer, and Quicktime are free players which allow you to play digital media files such as movies and musics over the internet. Different player will be able to play different types of digital format (e.g. .avi, .mpeg, .rm, .mov, .mp3, .asf, .wma, .wmv, .qt, etc).
In particular, Quicktime is necessary to view QTVR (quicktime virtual reality) files which allow you to navigate in a 3D panoramic view on some pages.
Cosmoplayer needs to be install in order to see 3-D visualization (e.g. .vrml, .wrl, etc).
Download the necessary plug-ins in order to get access to all contents on our webpages. If you are still encountering problems, please contact our web administrator

Combatibility - Do I need to install all the plug-ins?

Well, yes and no! Your computer should have some of the plug-ins preinstalled. If not, then yes, it would be nice to have all of these plug-ins. Not only will they allow you to browse through all the contents on our website, but it will also enhance your web browsing capability in many other common websites. However, some of these plug-ins are quite large in size. So if you have slow internet connection, then no, only download the necessary plug-ins to view the necessary page.

top

Combatibility - How do I obtain and install the plug-ins?

We have provided links to all of the necessary plug-ins above and in our index page. They are linked to their official download webpage of that specific plug-ins. And these download webpages will have all the information and guidance for their installation. Downloads - I cannot open your presentation files

You can only open the presentation files if you have Microsoft Office Powerpoint installed on your computer. However, even if you have Microsoft Office Powerpoint installed on your computer, because the presentation files are saved as a slideshow(.pps), you will not be able to edit any of the contents in the presentation files.

top

Downloads - Your presentation files don't look right on my computer. Why?

Most of our presentation files are made using Microsoft Office Powerpoint XP. If you are using Microsoft Office Powerpoint of a version prior to that, some of the animations might not be available or changed. Also some pictures might be distorted or flipped backwards.
In addition, the fonts for some of the text used might not be packed with the presentations file nor are they available on your computer. So some equations and words might not be displayed correctly.

top

Downloads - I cannot see the graphs and text on your poster clearly

Our posters are based on the size of an A0 sheet. We upload our posters in jpeg format because it is a cross-platform and compressed format. However, the quality is reduced and the format is lossy. If you want to view the poster clearly, you can either save it to your computer and then magnify it with a picture editing program or print it out with a high quality printer.
