There is current concern in the community about the health effects of radio frequency electromagnetic radiation. This radiation is non ionising but there is concern about possible effects on living systems resulting from the direct effects of electric and magnetic fields on cell membranes, ion transport and genetic mutations. The Applied Physics Department is engaged in collaborative research with Dr Peter French of St. Vincent's Hospital, Sydney which aims to determine whether fields at the levels experienced in the community from exposure to mobile phone hand sets and base stations, FM radio, radar, TV and microwave antennas can cause genetical changes in human cells.
