The Inaugural Sydney International Workshop on Synergies in Astronomy and Medicine

Sydney, Australia, 14-16 December 2009

Astronomy and Medicine share many similar demands for increasingly sophisticated and diverse imaging techniques as well as associated cutting-edge instrumentation technologies and advanced software tools for multi-dimensional data storage, manipulation and processing. This workshop will provide an international forum for exploring and consolidating these synergies, exchanging ideas and identifying opportunities for knowledge and technology transfer across the two research disciplines, and on to industry and academia.

Topics covered:

Imaging – 3D reconstruction, multi-modality and co-registration
Instrumentation - new detector technologies, astro-photonics
Data - visualization, acquisition, multi-dimensional handling techniques

Invited speakers:

  • Prof. Alyssa Goodman, Founding Director, Initiative in Innovative Computing Astronomical Medicine Project, Harvard University
  • Prof. Simon Cherry, Chair, Biomedical Engineering, University of California at Davis
  • Prof. Johan Nuyts, Division of Nuclear Medicine, Katholieke Universiteit, Leuven
  • Prof. David Hawkes, Center for Medical Image Computing, University College London
  • Prof. Terry Peters, Robarts Research Institute, University of Western Ontario
  • Prof. Mike Irwin, Director, Cambridge Astronomical Survey Unit, University of Cambridge
