The Astrophysics Group is one of three astrophysics research groups within the School of Physics at the University of Sydney. Together with the Astronomy Group and the Research Centre for Theoretical Astrophysics (RCfTA) they form the Institute of Astronomy. The Astrophysics group operates the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST) near Canberra, and is engaged in studies of star-forming galaxies and nebulae, active galaxies and supernova remnants. Our main research project is the Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey (SUMSS), a sensitive radio imaging survey of the southern sky at 843 MHz. SUMSS has similar resolution and sensitivity to the northern NVSS. The survey began in 1997, and data are publicly available. The latest SUMSS details and data. Other research programmes use the Anglo-Australian Telescope (optical) and Australia Telescope (radio), as well as telescopes overseas and in space. The Astrophysics Group is building a prototype for the next generation radio telescope, the Square Kilometre Array Molonglo Prototype (SKAMP), based on MOST. The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Radio Telescope, to be built from 2010-2015, will have a collecting area of one square kilometre, two orders of magnitude larger than any existing telescope, enabling the study of the early universe.
