The School of Physics offers a number of postgraduate scholarships for suitably qualified students enrolled or about to enrol in MSc or PhD research degrees in the School.

PhD Scholarship in Computational Biophysics

A PhD scholarship is available on the ARC project titled "Quantum Mechanical and Dynamical Investigation of Ion Channels". The stipend is equivalent to an APA for 3.5 years. If an applicant is awarded the APA, a top-up scholarship will be available. If interested, please contact:

Established in 2006 by a donation from Canon Information Systems Research Australia (CISRA), the prize is awarded annually to the postgraduate research student that produces the best refereed publication in a leading international journal. The paper must be a result of the student's current postgraduate studies.

The student may be a co-author but must be first author, and the prize may be shared where two or more students are joint (first and second) authors. Papers can only be considered once they are accepted for publication and if they are not yet published, the acceptance letter must also be submitted.

One prize (may be shared) is awarded annually on the recommendation of the Head of School of Physics, to a student enrolled in a Master of Science (Research), Master of Medical Physics or a Doctor of Philosophy degree. Value $2,000. No application is required, the prize is awarded on nomination from the research groups of the School.

Established in 2007 by the School of Physics from a donation by the Physics Alumni (USA) to recognise an outstanding thesis by a postgraduate research student. No application is required, the prize is awarded on nomination from the research groups of the School.

  1. The prize is awarded annually to the student who is judged to have completed the most outstanding PhD thesis in the School of Physics at the University of Sydney, whose degree has been awarded but not necessarily conferred in the previous calendar year. No candidate may be nominated more than once.
  2. The Head of School will ask for one nomination each year from research groups of the School of Physics.
  3. The nomination must consist of: the name of the student; a short (one-page) description of the significance and quality of the work in the thesis; the examination reports; and a copy of the thesis with evidence of the confirmation of the PhD award. Supporting documentation such as student prizes or awards during the period of PhD candidature may also be included.
  4. Only one prize shall be awarded, but may be shared where two PhD theses are considered of equal merit. If the selection committee considers that none of the theses nominated is of an appropriate standard, no award will be made.
  5. The Physics Postgraduate Alumni Prize Selection Committee will be appointed by the Head of School, and will determine the award recipient.
  6. In making its decision the Committee will take into account: the overall quality and significance of the work; the level of originality or creativity exhibited; and the intrinsic difficulty of the project. Mindful of the need to retain a balance between experimental and theoretical theses.
  7. The prize is valued at $1,000.

A full-time postgraduate scholarship is available for a suitably qualified candidate with a good honours degree in science or engineering to undertake research studies leading to a PhD in physics. The project involves utilising x-ray and neutron reflectometry to study thin film biosurfaces and their interaction with active biomolecules, including enzymes and antibodies. Applicants should have a particular interest in working in an interdisciplinary research team. The scholarship is valued at $24,851 per annum (tax exempt) and may be renewed for up to three years, subject to satisfactory progress.

Applicants must be Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or New Zealand citizens.*
