Postgraduate Awards in Medical Physics

At the University of Sydney students wishing to study Medical Physics through the Institute of Medical Physics within the School of Physics may undertake either a coursework program towards the award of a Master of Medical Physics degree (M.Med.Phys.) or a Graduate Diploma in Medical Physics (Grad.Dip.Med.Phys.), or a research program towards the award of a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or a Master of Science (M.Sc.).

Medical Physics Lecture Timetable - Semester 1, 2008

Lectures are normally given on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning on 4 March and ending on 5 June. All lectures are held in Lecture Theatre 4, first floor, Physics Building on Physics Road, unless otherwise specified. There is a timetable available for download as a PDF file.

Master of Medical Physics (M.Med.Phys.)

Candidates for the Master of Medical Physics degree are expected to have successfully completed a Bachelor's degree in the physical sciences with a major in physics, or an equivalent degree. The Master of Medical Physics is undertaken over three semesters (full-time) or six semesters (part-time). During the first two (four) full-time (part-time) semesters, students undertake the following lecture course units:

  • PHYS 5011 Nuclear Physics
  • PHYS 5012 Radiation Physics and Dosimetry
  • PHYS 5002 Anatomy and Physiology (includes Radiation Biology)
  • PHYS 5003 Instrumentation
  • PHYS 5005 Radiotherapy Physics
  • PHYS 5006 Medical Imaging Physics
  • PHYS 5020 Computation and Image Processing
  • PHYS 5018 Health Physics and Radiation Protection

In addition to these coursework units, M.Med.Phys. candidates also undertake a research project normally over one (full-time) or two (part-time) semester(s).

Completion of the Master of Medical Physics degree will satisfy one of the requisites for the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM) training, education and accreditation program.

Faculty information for Prospective Students.

Graduate Diploma in Medical Physics (Grad.Dip.Med.Phys.)

Students undertake the same lecture course units as the Master of Medical Physics students (see above), but do not undertake a research project.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

The Doctor of Philosophy research degree in Medical Physics may be taken on either a full-time or part-time basis. In the case of full-time candidates, the minimum period of candidature is three years for candidates holding a Bachelor's degree in the physical sciences or equivalent or two years for candidates holding a Master's degree in the physical sciences or equivalent. The maximum period of candidature is five years. Part-time candidature may be approved for applicants who can demonstrate that they are engaged in an occupation or other activity which leaves them substantially free to pursue their candidature. The minimum period of part-time candidature is three years; the maximum period is seven years.

Master of Science (M.Sc.)

The Master of Science research degree in Medical Physics may be taken on either a full-time or part-time basis. In the case of full-time candidature the minimum period of candidature is one year; the maximum period is two years. In the case of part-time candidature the minimum and maximum periods are one year and four years respectively.
