 Intermediate Physics Units (Physics 2)

The School of Physics offers students in the Faculty of Science one six credit point unit in first semester (at both Normal and Advanced levels) and two in second semester (again at both Normal and Advanced levels). The outline of these six units, and PHYS 2213 for Engineering students, is given in the following Table.

Each unit is divided into modules, usually presented by several different lecturers.

  • Most Intermediate Physics Units of Study have resources provided on WebCT pages (as indicated by the link in the Unit title bar). Students enrolled in those Units can then use the WebCT link to access their own myWebCT page and hence the web resources for that unit.
Information on most Modules is accessible to anyone by clicking on the Module name to download the Module Outline in PDF format.
  • To view PDF files you will need the Acrobat Reader which can be downloaded for free from the USYDNet site at http://helpdesk.usyd.edu.au/software.html

After completing Intermediate Physics, consider the Year in Industry program which provides students with the opportunity to spend a year using their Physics experience to work in industry between their Intermediate and Senior years.

PHYS 2011 Physics 2A

Time of Offer: 1st Semester
Credit Points: 6

This unit of study continues a first pass through all major branches of classical and modern physics, providing students with a sound basis for later Physics units or for studies in other areas of science or technology. Hence this unit suits students continuing with the study of physics at the general Intermediate level, and those wishing to round out their knowledge of physics before continuing in other fields. Some components of this unit are in common with PHYS 2911 Physics 2A (Advanced).

Modules studied: Optics;
Computational Physics - Optics; Nuclear Physics; Experimental Physics

PHYS 2011 Handbook (2008)

PHYS 2911 Physics 2A (Advanced)

Time of Offer: 1st Semester
Credit Points: 6

This unit continues a first pass through all major branches of classical and modern physics for students with a strong interest in Physics and who have achieved a grade of Credit, or better, in both semesters of Junior Physics (any units except PHYS 1500). Some components of this unit are in common with PHYS 2011 Physics 2A.

Modules studied: Optics; Computational Physics - Optics; Nuclear Physics; Experimental Physics

PHYS 2911 Handbook (2008)

PHYS 2012 Physics 2B

Time of Offer: 2nd Semester
Credit Points: 6

This unit of study is designed for students continuing with the study of physics at the general Intermediate level, and represents the beginning of a more in-depth study of the main topics of classical and modern physics. Some components of this unit are in common with PHYS 2912 Physics 2B (Advanced).
Note that this unit has no Experimental Physics component.

Modules studied:
Quantum Physics; Computational Physics - Quantum Physics; Electromagnetic Properties of Matter
