From time to time, the Science Foundation for Physics provides
funding for strategic outreach or educational projects that
fit with the aims of the Foundation. These are typically in
the form of seeding grants for a fixed period.
School of Physics Outreach Officer
In 2002 the School of Physics appointed a dedicated Outreach
Officer to work under the guidance of the School's External
Relations Committee. The Outreach Officer runs the School's
programs for high school students, including HSC KickStart and
the Gifted and Talented Students' Workshops . The
Officer also helps to organise events such as shows for National
Science Week, Courses and Careers Day and other outreach events
for the School.
These outreach activities have been so successful that the
position has grown from part time to full time, and has become
self-funding. For more information contact the School's current
Outreach Officer, Dr Phil Dooley -- email: outreach@physics.usyd.edu.au or
visit the School's
Outreach web page.
MyScience - www.myscience.edu.au
The Science Foundation joined with IBM, the NSW Department of Education and Training (Western Sydney Region) and ACU to create MyScience. This primary school program aims to spark children’s natural curiosity about the world around them then enable them to feed that curiosity through science investigation.
Children work independently but are in touch with Scientist mentors with whom they can discuss and debate and from whom they can be inspired and motivated. Teachers are also involved as MyScience provides primary school teachers with opportunities for development and peer-to-peer support.
