Professor Harry Messel International Science School

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

How can I apply for the ISS?
Applications for each ISS open in January of an ISS year. Information packages are sent to each state selection committee (usually the Science Teacher's Association, or Education Department in your state) who then send on details to every high school in their state.

How often is the ISS run?
The International Science School is run every two years, in odd-numbered years (2005, 2007, 2009 ...). The next ISS will run 3-16 July, 2011.

Who can apply to come to the ISS?
If you will be in grade 11 or 12 in the year that the ISS runs, you can apply to be an ISS scholar.

Where is it held?
The ISS is run at the University of Sydney, mainly within the School of Physics. You will stay on campus throughout the ISS at one of the university residences.

What happens at the ISS?
The ISS is a very full two weeks of science and social activity. Scholars attend lectures by leading scientists, workshops on many different scientific topics and enjoy a very full social program. You will also have access to the university gym (not weights room if you are under 18 years old), pool and library. There are also facilities for music and other study if required.

Where do the ISS Scholars come from?
Students attend the ISS from all over the world — of the 140 ISS scholars, around two thirds come from the states and territories of Australia. The remaining third come from nine other countries: China, Japan, India, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

How are ISS Scholars chosen?
Students must apply to attend the ISS, and are selected on academic merit, and leadership qualities — city or country, public school, private school or independent school ... it doesn't matter where you come from, all students are competitively selected at the state level, and attendance is by scholarship only.

How much does it cost?
Nothing! ISS scholarships cover all expenses — there is no cost to the ISS scholars. Valued at approximately $3,300, the ISS scholarship covers return travel within Australia, food and accommodation at the College for the duration of the School and all ISS events and activities. You are encouraged to bring some spending money as there are other opportunities to go on organised events run by the Young Scientists of Australia. These include city tours (and shopping!), zoo visits, movie & theater nights and rock-climbing.
