SILLIAC, the first computer built in an Australian university, celebrated its 50th Anniversary in September 2006 with a special two-day event focusing on the past, present and future of information and communication technology — ICT Pioneers and Leaders. These celebrations aimed not only to honour the history of information and communication technology within the University of Sydney and its impact on the broader community, but also to highlight the future impact and importance of ICT.

The SILLIAC 50th Anniversary Celebration Dinner was held on Tuesday 12 September 2006 in Maclaurin Hall and was deemed by all attending to be an event not to be forgotten.

Mrs Louise Davis, President, Science Foundation for Physics welcomed guests to the special occasion. Speakers included University of Sydney Chancellor, Justice Kim Santow OAM and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gavin Brown AO. Mr Drew Kelton, Managing Director, Telstra International was the guest speaker. Ms Karina Kelly was the evening's very glamourous MC. Emeritus Professor Harry Messel AC CBE ws in great demand and held centre stage no matter where he was.

Prior to the dinner the SILLIAC Pioneers Reunion was held in the Slade Lecture Theatre, School of Physics. A panel of eight SILLIAC Pioneers - Peter Aplin (Engineer), Ian Johnston (PhD Student), Elizabeth Johnston (Operator), John Butcher (Adolph Basser Research Student), John Deane (Computer Historian), June Crawford (Operator), John Kelly (Snowy Mountains Project User), Barry de Ferranti (Engineer) reminisced before taking questions from the enthused audience.

Following the Reunion, John Deane's book, SILLIAC - Vacuum Tube Supercomputer, was launched to great approval in the Nicholson Museum.

The 50th Anniversary Celebration DVD, SILLIAC, narrated by Adam Spencer, was premiered at the dinner.
