Foundation Structure and Management

The Science Foundation for Physics, established in 1954, was known until 1966 as the Nuclear Research Foundation. It was the first foundation created within the University of Sydney and within Australia. Currently there are 34 active foundations within the University. As a University foundation, the Science Foundation for Physics is responsible to the University Senate.

The Foundation Council recommends for approval the major and strategic decisions regarding the activities of the Foundation. Council members are representatives of business and industry, community leaders and senior office holders and academic staff of the University of Sydney.

Both the President and Deputy President are elected by the Council and each holds a two year term of office. The Council is elected at the Foundation's Annual General Meeting, and the Council may approve Life Governor status to recognise outstanding service to the Science Foundation for Physics.

As a University of Sydney Foundation the responsibility for day-to-day decisions and running of the Foundation rests with the University Officer. For the Science Foundation for Physics the University Officer is the Dean of Science.

Foundation Committees

The Foundation's activities are directed by a structure of committees.

  • Strategy & Development Committee suggests strategic initiatives such as education programs and fundraising activities to Council to best fulfill the Foundation's aims.
  • Finance Committee oversees the finances of the Foundation including budgeting, consultation with Investment Capital Management (ICM) regarding investments and monitoring expenditure.

Other committees are set up as needs dictate.

Foundation Finance Policy

Foundation funds are managed and invested by the University’s Investment Capital Management (ICM).
