Your Own Web Page
The BasicsThis page is intended as an introduction to those who want to create their own web page within the School of Physics computer system. It assumes that you have a minimal knowledge about the process of creating a web page and the basics of how to create and edit files using the "vi" or other types of editors.
The first thing to do is log onto your Physics Account and create a directory called "public_html" within your main directory. This is done by the following command:
All that is now required is to copy any files and images which you want to appear into that directory. It is important to remember that the first page which a person browsing your site comes to should be called "index.html". Other pages may be named anything you prefer, but should always have the extension ".html".
Once you have done this the Universal Resource Locater (URL) by which your page is found (in other word its internet address), will be:
where username is your Physics account. It is important to remember that your account name is not necessarily the same as the first part of your email address. If you are not sure how to do any of this, contact one of the system administrators firstname.lastname@example.org.
There are a lot of books available on the subject of how to write web pages. There are also higher level editors which protect you from having to worry too much about HTML codes. New versions of WORD for example can save files as HTML directly. Here is a template page for a simple personal homepage to begin with. Look at other people's pages for less mundane ideas.
Once you have a personal web page, tell Sang The HR officer, who will update your information in the School database so that your personal web page is linked to your "official" web page generated from the database.
