Finisar Lab Tour (20th May 2009)
The lab tour was again really worthwhile, with about 30 students from both Sydney and Macquarie Uni'scoming along, in one of the two universitys OSA chapter joint events.
Former CUDOS researcher Michael Roelens gave us an overview of the fabrication facilities, R&D and his own brainchild - the Waveshaper. The new labs are HUGE, and gave us a very different perspective on what a lab can be (the lack of stickytape was notable, as was the lack of piles of "general optical components" ...). It was interesting to hear that people still play a vital role in manufacturing high-tech goods, and often provide key insights into getting a product running better, and out the door sooner.
Ian Clarke (Engineering Manager) gave us an excellent overview of what the company does, what it's up to and gave us some key insights into how reserch and development varies betweenthe worlds of acedemia and industry - the key take home message: in industry, you have to get it right EVERY time. I'm well versed in getting something to work well once if I'm careful, these guys have to get something to work all the time, with customers who are so careful!
And it was nice to learn that this company is hiring again ...
We wrapped the event up with some afternoon tea and a chat with a few of the guys working there (former USyd and MQ students among them). All in all, a great event.
