[ASA] ASA Prize announcement

Dear ASA members,

The ASA is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2018 ASA Awards. The prize winners will be presenting their research at the ASA Scientific Meeting, 24-29 June hosted by Swinburne University https://asa2018.swin.edu.au/<https://asa2018.swin.edu.au/>

Bok Prize for outstanding research in astronomy by an Honours or eligible Masters student
Awarded to Matthew Keen for his thesis “Asteroseismology of Subgiant Stars: A Study of Mixed-Mode Oscillations”. Matthew completed his honours research at the University of Sydney, supervised by Tim Bedding and Tanda Li.

Charlene Heisler Prize for the most outstanding PhD thesis in astronomy
Awarded to Anish Amarsi for his thesis “Three-dimensional non-local thermodynamic equilibrium radiative transfer and oxygen abundances in late-type stars” completed at the Australian National University and supervised by Martin Asplund.

Louise Webster Prize for outstanding research by a scientist early in their post-doctoral career
 Awarded to Dr Emily Wisnioski from the ANU for the paper “The KMOS 3D Survey: Design, First Results, and the Evolution of Galaxy Kinematics from 0.7 < z < 2.7” (2015, ApJ, 799, 209).

In addition, an honourable mention to Dr Caroline Foster (AAO) for her paper “The SAMI Galaxy Survey: the intrinsic shape of kinematically selected galaxies” published as Foster et al., 2017, MNRAS, 472, 966.

Congratulations to all our prize winners and nominees. The entries received for the prizes continue to be of a very high standard and a credit to their institutions. Many thanks to all our judges for devoting a considerable amount of their time to reading all of the entries and a special thanks to our ASA Prizes and Awards Coordinator Tanya Hill for making this process run smoothly every year.
