Dear ASA members,

The Federal government is going through a consultation process relating to the National Science and Research Priorities<https://consult.industry.gov.au/sciencepriorities2>.

The ASA and the AIP have made a joint submission, which is on our public document archive<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/mXaaC3QNPBiXvL9M0IgBekR?domain=asa.astronomy.org.au> at this link<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/NXv0C4QOPEizxL9W3hxqvyd?domain=asa.astronomy.org.au>.

Using examples from astronomy and physics, we highlighted the crucial role of fundamental sciences, and advocated for explicit inclusion of fundamental research as one of the Priorities. These messages mostly mirror our original submission<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/HzIGC5QPXJiM1qpK4iyOCEI?domain=asa.astronomy.org.au> some months ago.

My understanding is that this is likely to be the final round of consultation before the Priorities are finalised. If you have any further ideas, I note that individuals as well as organisations can make submissions by following the link at the start of this email. The consultation closes on September 29.

Best wishes,

Stas
