Colleagues,

It is with sadness that we write to inform you of the passing of Nigel Poole.

Many ASA members will not know Nigel directly, but you will be familiar with major astronomy projects that have benefited from Nigel's involvement.

Nigel's training was in law and economics, and he initially worked as an investment banker and management consultant. Nigel commenced with CSIRO in 2002, and for the following decade used his skills to support Australian science. During that time, Nigel played a key role in the enforcement and licensing of the Wireless LAN technology patent, securing hundreds of millions of dollars from that invention for CSIRO. Within CSIRO's senior management, he also supported SKA activities, and astronomy more generally.

More recently, Nigel served as an Australian member of the GMTO Board from 2015 until 2021. At the end of this period, the GMTO Board engaged Nigel as their strategic advisor to benefit from his ongoing insights, which he continued to provide until very recently. In these roles, Nigel provided critical support to GMTO and helped to ensure a strong Australian perspective in the project. He was a generous and perceptive colleague, and will be missed by all who knew him.
