Institute of Medical Physics

At the University of Sydney students wishing to study Medical Physics through the Institute of Medical Physics within the School of Physics may undertake either a coursework Master of Medical Physics degree (M.Med.Phys.) or a Graduate Diploma in Medical Physics (Grad.Dip.Med.Phys.).

Master of Medical Physics (M.Med.Phys.)

Candidates for the Master of Medical Physics degree are expected to have successfully completed a Bachelor's degree in the physical sciences or equivalent. The Master of Medical Physics is undertaken over three semesters (full-time) or six semesters (part-time). During the first two semesters full-time students undertake taught course units in Radiation Physics, Anatomy & Physiology, Instrumentation, Radiation Dosimetry, Radiotherapy Physics, Medical Imaging Physics, Image Processing, Radiation Biology & Health Physics, Research Methodology. In the third semester full-time students undertake a project. Part-time students undertake the taught courses over four semesters and a project in semesters five and six.

Completion of the Master of Medical Physics degree will satisfy one of the requisites for the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM) training, education and accreditation program.

Graduate Diploma in Medical Physics (Grad.Dip.Med.Phys.)

Students undertake the same taught course units as the Master of Medical Physics students but do not undertake a project.

Prospective Students

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

The Doctor of Philosophy research degree in Medical Physics may be taken on either a full-time or part-time basis. In the case of full-time candidates, the minimum period of candidature is three years for candidates holding a Bachelor's degree in the physical sciences or equivalent or two years for candidates holding a Master's degree in the physical sciences or equivalent. The maximum period of candidature is five years. Part-time candidature may be approved for applicants who can demonstrate that they are engaged in an occupation or other activity which leaves them substantially free to pursue their candidature. The minimum period of part-time candidature is three years; the maximum period is seven years.

Master of Science (M.Sc.)

The Master of Science research degree in Medical Physics may be taken on either a full-time or part-time basis. In the case of full-time candidature the minimum period of candidature is one year; the maximum period is two years. In the case of part-time candidature the minimum and maximum periods are one year and four years respectively.
