Introduction

Nuclear Science Image

The Institute of Nuclear Science (INS) was formally established in the School of Physics, University of Sydney, in December 2007. It acts as an umbrella organization for all research and teaching activities within the School that are related to nuclear science. Many of these activities are undertaken collaboratively with the Australian Nuclear Science & Technology Organisation (ANSTO) with which the University shares a Memorandum of Understanding.

Mission Statement

To undertake and promote innovative and cutting-edge research in the nuclear sciences, with a scope and a focus leading to outstanding national and international recognition.

To link existing research activities and develop new programs for interdisciplinary and collaborative efforts towards addressing challenging problems in contemporary nuclear science research.

To attract, from within Australia and abroad, researchers of high international standing and the most promising research students.

To provide a high quality postgraduate and postdoctoral training environment for researchers in the nuclear sciences.

To offer Australian researchers access to world class resources in the nuclear sciences.

To develop relationships and build networks with internationally recognised institutions that will help achieve global recognition for Australian research in the nuclear sciences.

Research Activities

The Institute's research and teaching activities focus on promoting recognition of the wide ranging applications of nuclear science in modern society. Research projects that are currently being undertaken at the School of Physics in association with the Institute of Nuclear Science include areas such as:

  • Nuclear medicine physics
  • Nuclear materials modelling
  • Nuclear fusion
  • Nuclear fuel cycle

In addition, the research activities of ANSTO include nuclear instrumentation and accelerator science, geochronology and other environmental applications of radionuclides, development of radiopharmaceuticals, as well as nuclear engineering and materials science.
