School of Physics, University of Sydney
Discussion Groups exist primarily to promote discussion
between students in the course. They are maintained for us
by the NeTTL (New
Technologies for Teaching and Learning) group within the University's
Centre for Teaching & Learning.
The main use of the Discussion Group is to develop conceptual understanding
by exploring a few targeted problems, based as close as possible on situations
in the real world. Some of these questions may assist you in answering your
assignments. Questions will be posted each week for students to discuss.
Discussions beyond these posted questions are also encouraged, so long as
they stay reasonably close to the content of the course. Questions about
some particular subject arising in the course can be posted as a new thread
in this area, giving everyone a chance to reply or see a reply from one of
the lecturers. In particular you may wish to post questions based on the
demonstrations and questions included within the web pages.
Physics staff will monitor the Discussions in the same way as any of
the students and make their own contributions if they wish. Any message
violating the
"Nettiquette" guidelines outlined on the Discussion page may be deleted
by NeTTL.
How to Read and Post Messages
Read the comments already posted by other people and if you want to reply
choose the "Reply" option. If you want to start a new message then use the
"Post" option.
Guidelines for Posting Messages
- Read the "Nettiquette"
guidelines first. Remember, the discussion group is a public place,
so behave as you would in public!
- When you have a contribution, think before you type! Generally you
should keep your messages short and to the point.
- You may find it easier to prepare your contribution in a word processor
and then copy and paste it into the submission field.
- Don't stray too far from the subject of a thread. Start a new one
instead.
