Sublimation of Dry Ice
Other Relevant Demos :
Cooling by Evaporation.
Relevant Resource questions :
Concepts demonstrated :
- Change of state - sublimation.
Diagram of apparatus :
diagram yet to come
Equipment needed :
- small block/pieces of dry ice
- petri dish
- CCD camera
- Also iodine (warm, so vapour can be seen rising from the crystals)
Method for setting up apparatus :
- Place dry ice on petri dish and observe.
Accessories (ie posters etc) :
None
Physics involved :
When dry ice (CO2) melts it goes straight to a gas.
How to use the Demonstration :
- Discuss change of state, in particular sublimation.
- Discuss uses of dry ice - ice cream trucks; source of fog/smoke for movies etc; punch at PhySoc Physics parties.
Everyday examples :
- Liquid CO2 carried in trucks (POE).
Question: How can we have liquid CO2? We must have lots of pressure (develop). The output pipe gives a gas or a solid?
Things to do or add :
- Would be good to make a poster for Open Day.
- Chase CIG/Bogas for promotional videos, sheets etc.
