Fergurson's pyrometer
Other Relevant Demos :
Ball and ring; Plate with hole
Breaking Apparatus (break a small metal rod)
Bottle and tube
Gas bulb and U-tube
Relevant Resource Questions :
Concepts demonstrated :
- thermal expansion of solids
Diagram of apparatus :
diagram yet to come
Equipment needed :
- Fergurson's pyrometer
- bunsen burner and matches
Method for setting up apparatus :
- Light the bunsen burner and heat the rod connected to the pyrometer.
- Observe the motion of the needle as the rod expands.
- Repeat the experiment cooling the rod using liquid nitrogen.
Accessories (ie posters etc) :
Physics involved :
This is a quantitative way of measuring the thermal expansion of solids. A lever system magnifies the expansion to move a needle through an arc.
