You wish to make a saucepan to use on your stove.
1. What would you make the handle of the saucepan out of ?
2. Why would you make the handle out of this material ?
Ask question 3 if the student did not suggest a metal handle.
3. Why did you not suggest making the handle out of metal ?
Water is placed into a saucepan with a metal handle with the temperature of the water and saucepan originally at 20oC. The saucepan is then heated on the stove.
4. What will be the temperature at the three points on the handle of the saucepan labelled A, B and C when the temperature of the water just reaches 50oC ?
5. Why did you choose these values for the temperatures ? (look for temperatures that are the same or different)
6. I continue to heat the water and notice that the water has just started to boil. What will be the temperature at the three points on the handle labelled A, B and C this time ?
8. If the water has been boiling for a long time what now would be the temperature at the three points on the handle labelled A, B and C ?
