The Workshop Tutorial Project

The Workshop Tutorial project is a CUTSD funded national teaching development initiative. The project is a collaboration between the University of Sydney, University of Technology Sydney, University of New South Wales, Australian Catholic University and University of Western Sydney.

Workshop Tutorials were developed in the School of Physics at the University of Sydney. The Workshop Tutorials are based on cooperative grouping and include simple hands on activities (demonstrations), both features highly rated by students. The Workshop Tutorials have evolved into a powerful learning environment for students, and are easy to insert into existing physics courses. Evaluations have shown that the Workshop Tutorials are successful in increasing active participation in classes, improving student motivation and attitudes to learning, and improving performance in assessment tasks.

The aim of the project is to produce a Workshop Tutorial Manual, which will be freely available both electronically (CD) and in book form. The material in the Workshop Manual will be organised into three main sections. The three sections are:

  1. training materials,
  2. worksheets and solutions for approximately 150 tutorials,
  3. demonstration resources for approximately 200 hands on activities.
