JUNIOR PHYSICS PROJECTS

This web site provides a list of resources to help you choose and perform your project.

NEW - X-Ray experiment - details in section 6.

If you have special requirements then talk to your tutor, supervisors, Laboratory Manager (Barry Napthali) or Project coordinator (Dr Richard Tarrant).

Files can be saved in the lab and then downloaded to home from the web site

Useful Websites

  • Pasco Physics Experiments. Many of their projects described on the Pasco web site can be attempted in the 1st year teaching lab.

  • Wikipedia contains a wealth of general articles on Physics. Most are well written and reliable.

  • A good search engine to use to find out about project topics is

           www.google.com

Useful Journals

These journals will contain information on possible topics. It is acceptable for you to reproduce an experiment described in a journal article.

Basic Laboratory Equipment

You should be familiar with the basic equipment that is available for your Project from the laboratory activities you have done throughout the year (consult your lab manuals).

Data Acquisition: Hardware & Software

ULI & Logger Pro – used for motion experiments with motion detector. Can also be used for voltage (walking characteristics & pendulum) and temperature measurements.

PicoScope  – transforms a computer into a digital storage oscilloscope. Fourier analysis can be performed on your data. Download Manual

Cool Edit – professional sound and music editing program. Many features included for recording, analysing and modifying sounds.

Video point – images of moving objects that have been recorded using a web cam or digital video camera can be analysed. Download Manual

PROJECT TOPICS

The topics listed are only suggestions. The equipment lists may not be complete, but will give you an indication of the equipment that is available in our first year laboratory. For many projects, you will need to supply some items yourself.

For your Project proposals that are submitted, you need to provide a complete list of equipment.

Some projects can be done by doing a number of related activities.

1.   Mechanics – Motion – Sports – Biophysics –  Medical Physics

2.   Properties of Matter – Fluids

3.   Thermal Physics and Solar Energy

4.   Mechanical waves: Sound – Music – Acoustics –  Ultrasound

5.   Light – Optics – Lasers

6.   Electromagnetic radiation: Radio –  Microwaves – Ultraviolet - Xray

7.   Electricity – Magnetism – Electronics

8.   Atomic Physics

9.   Radioactivity
