Space Physics: Solar and planetary radio emission processes are studied, including nonlinear, stochastic, and wave-particle aspects. Applications to type II and III solar radio bursts, planetary foreshock emissions, and the auroras are pursued. Comparison with spacecraft observations is undertaken in collaboration with workers in the US and Europe.
Plasma turbulence and nonlinear waves: Theories and applications of strong Langmuir turbulence and wave collapse are studied. Large scale electromagnetic Langmuir turbulence simulations are being undertaken in collaboration with workers at Berkeley and Caltech.
Neurophysics: A continuum model of EEG waves has been developed and is being applied to calculate spectra, impulse responses, stead states, and dynamics of the electrical activity of the brain. Comparison with clinical observations is being carried out in collaboration with the Brain Dynamics Center of Westmead Hospital and the Mental Health Research Institute, Victoria.
Optics: Waves in photonic crystals and random media are being studied, with particular interest in band structure and random lasers.
Self-Organized Criticality: Applications of self-organized criticality
to space and biological systems are being investigated.
