Scholarships and Prizes

The School of Physics annually awards over $40,000 in scholarships and prizes to students in Junior, Intermediate and Senior Physics. These prizes and scholarships are eagerly sought by our students and provide a real incentive to continue with the study of Physics.

The School of Physics also offers scholarships for students proceeding into Honours and Postgraduate Physics. Information on these can be found on pages describing Honours Scholarships and Postgraduate Scholarships.

School of Physics - Julius Sumner Miller Scholarships for Academic Excellence No 1 Junior Physics Up to two scholarships to be awarded annually on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Physics to the most proficient students in Junior Physics provided that their work is of sufficient merit and they enrol in at least 12 credit points of Intermediate Physics. $700
Levey Scholarship No 1 Junior Physics Awarded for proficiency in Junior Physics to a student in the Faculty of Arts, Science or Engineering who is proceeding to at least 12 credit points of Intermediate Physics. $825
Science Foundation for Physics Scholarships No 1 Junior Physics Up to five scholarships to be awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Physics for proficiency in Junior Physics, provided that the student's work is of sufficient merit and that the student enrols in at least 12 credit points of Intermediate Physics. $700
Smith Prize Junior Physics Awarded to the best undergraduate in Junior Experimental Physics. $200
Sky & Space Prize Junior Physics Awarded to the best undergraduate in PHYS 1500 Astronomy. Subscription to S&S + $100 gift voucher

Geoffrey Builder - AWA Prize Intermediate Physics Awarded annually to a student for proficiency in practical work. $250
Science Foundation for Physics Scholarships No 2 Intermediate Physics Up to five scholarships to be awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Physics for proficiency in Intermediate Physics, provided that the student’s work is of sufficient merit and that the student enrols in 24 credit points of Senior Physics. $800
Slade Prize Intermediate Physics Awarded for proficiency in Intermediate Physics practicals. $350
School of Physics - Julius Sumner Miller Scholarships for Academic Excellence No 3 Senior Physics Up to two scholarships to be awarded annually on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Physics to the most proficient students in Senior Physics provided that their work is of sufficient merit and they enrol in Physics Honours. $3000
Deas - Thomson Scholarship For Physics Senior Physics Awarded annually by the Dean of the Faculty of Science, on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Physics, to the student in either the Faculty of Arts or the Faculty of Science who demonstrates the greatest proficiency in Senior Physics, provided the student’s work is of sufficient merit. The student is required to enrol in Physics Honours at the University. $6500
Science Foundation for Physics Scholarships No 3 Senior Physics Up to five scholarships to be awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Physics for proficiency in Senior Physics, provided that the student’s work is of sufficient merit and that the student enrols in Physics Honours. $3000
W.I.B. Smith Prize Senior Physics The prize may be awarded annually on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Physics to the student who best combines the characteristics of experimental skill, proficiency and exceptional motivation in the Senior laboratory classes, provided the student's work is of sufficient merit. $300
Walter Burfitt Scholarship No. II Senior Physics Awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Physics, for proficiency in Senior Physics in the Faculty of Science. The scholar shall be required to pursue the study of Physics Honours. $750
The Malcolm Turki Memorial Scholarship The Scholarship is open to students who are/have completed Year 3 within the School of Physics and wish to complete Honours year. The Scholarship shall be awarded to a student who is a citizen of Australia. Scholarship shall be awarded on the basis of academic merit and demonstrated financial need. $1700
Shiroki Prize Physics Honours Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Physics to the student who submits the best Honours project in the Honours year provided the candidate's work is of sufficient merit. $500
Australian Institute of Physics (N.S.W. Branch) Prize in Physics Physics Honours Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Physics, to the student graduating with the degree of Bachelor of Science with Honours in Physics who shows greatest proficiency provided that the student's work is of sufficient merit. $200
Ormsby Hamilton Radio Prize An undergraduate or a graduate of not more than 4 years The prize is to be awarded for work submitted in the even years for a dissertation (such as an essay, research report or thesis) in the field of Radio science. Upto $600
Henry Chamberlain Russell Prize for Astronomy A student enrolled for a degree within the University. Awarded for an essay, thesis or research report on an astronomical subject. $750
