DATE: Thu, 8 Oct 2009 22:14:15 +1100 SUBJECT: PhD studentships in Astronomy & Astrophysics at the ANU The Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Australian National University (ANU) is currently inviting applications for its PhD research program. The Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) has an academic staff of over 30 astronomers and a group of some 23 national and international PhD students. Research interests at RSAA are broad and arranged around a number of themes; extra-solar planets and stars; Galactic archeology - deciphering the past history of our Galaxy and the Local Group; studies of the structure and dynamics of galaxies; black hole physics; cosmology, the formation and evolution of the Universe as a whole; and advanced instrumentation. The ANU's SkyMapper Telescope, due to begin operation in late 2009, will provide the first ever deep digital optical survey of the Southern Sky, offering a great opportunity for graduate students to access a huge new data resource. RSAA operates the 2.3m telescope at Siding Spring Observatory and has recently designed and built WiFES, a very efficient Wide Field Spectrograph for this telescope. It leads the Australian collaboration in the international Giant Magellan Telescope project and will contribute to telescope design and future instrumentation through its Advanced Instrumentation and Technology Centre. A new powerful supercomputer is being installed at ANU as part of the National Computing Infrastructure; ANU staff and students have generous access to this as a part of the ANU’s partner share. In addition, a new 128 node SGI cluster is being installed at Mount Stromlo. Applications for the PhD program are due by 31 October 2009 for commencement during January – March 2010. Successful applicants are eligible for Australian Postgraduate Awards and ANU PhD scholarships of $22,500 plus a $5,000 per annum tax free RSAA Supplementary Scholarship.
