DATE: Fri, 11 Sep 2009 11:05:19 +1000 SUBJECT: AAT Service Observing - Call for Proposals AAT SERVICE OBSERVING - CALL FOR PROPOSALS The Anglo-Australian Observatory (AAO) operates a service observing programme at the 4-metre Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) for proposals requiring less than 6 hours of observing time. The next deadline is *** Thursday, 1st October 2009, at 23:59 *** (Australian Eastern Standard Time, i.e. UTC + 10 hrs) Applications are welcomed from all astronomers, worldwide. The following instruments are available for service observations: AAOmega, IRIS2, UCLES/UHRF, SPIRAL. ************************************************************************* NOTE: Calls for AAT Service Time are now THREE times per year: 1 October, 1 February, 1 June (AAOmega fld file deadlines still follow 6 weeks after each proposal deadline on 15 November, 15 March, and 15 July.) We especially encourage bright time proposals for AAOmega. CYCLOPS, the new cassegrain-mounted fibre feed for UCLES/UHRF will be offered on a shared-risk basisin 10A (subject to the successful commissioning of the instrument in January 2010). The AAO expects that CYCLOPS will be the default feed into UCLES for most applications using the 79 l/mm echelle. Interested users are urged to consult the UCLES instrument pages for more information: http://www.aao.gov.au/AAO/astro/ucles.html and should also state in their proposals whether they can use the conventional coude slit feed (in the event that CYCLOPS is unavailable). Service Programmes expire after 18 months. Current programmes submitted before 01 April 2008 will be purged from the queue. If you have an existing programme in this category, you are invited to resubmit this round. ************************************************************************* (The number of service nights allocated per instrument is set each semester by the Anglo-Australian Time Assignment Committee (AATAC).) Please see http://www.aao.gov.au/local/www/service/service.html for more information about the AAT Service Programme and application forms. Chris Springob (service @ aao.gov.au) Helen Woods
