Location: Townsville Closing Date: 26 February 2010 Reference No: 9224 Position Statement: The Centre for Astronomy specialises in the delivery of internet-based postgraduate degrees in Astrophysics and History of Astronomy. We are a young and fast-growing astronomy department and currently have one of the largest graduate research schools in astronomy in Australia. We seek candidates with experience in any area of astrophysics and/or the history of astronomy. The appointee will: supervise students in the online PhD program as well as pursuing their own research; assist in the production of the Journal of Astronomical History and Heritage; play a key role in the expansion and development of the Centre for Astronomy; and assist in the Master of Astronomy course. Duties and Accountabilities The appointee will be required to: * Supervise PhD students in astrophysics and history of astronomy; * Pursue independent research in astrophysics and/or history of astronomy; * Assist with the Master of Astronomy degree; * Assist with the Journal of Astronomical History and Heritage. Key Selection Criteria 1. A PhD in astrophysics, History of Science or related discipline; 2. Research interest and experience in astrophysics and/or history of astronomy; 3. An excellent publication record; 4. Evidence of excellent written and oral communication skills. Desirable Selection Criteria 1. Experience in supervision of research students in astronomy or related field; 2. Experience in teaching online degrees; 3. Experience in producing a scientific journal.
