DATE: Mon, 24 Aug 2009 00:05:41 +1000 SUBJECT: PhD Scholarships at Swinburne University: October application round Dear ASA Members, We would be grateful if you could bring the following to the attention of interested students. PhD Scholarships at Swinburne University The Centre for Astrophysics & Supercomputing (CAS) at Swinburne University of Technology (Melbourne, Australia) invites applications for its PhD program and scholarships. With 15 research faculty and over 30 postdoctoral researchers and students, CAS offers a friendly, vibrant and research-focused atmosphere where PhD students help conduct - and learn how to lead - cutting-edge research. CAS recently signed a collaborative agreement with Caltech guaranteeing up to 20 nights per year on the twin 10-m Keck Telescopes in Hawaii. CAS is also home to The Green Machine, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Australia. Our research strengths cover all major areas of astronomy, from cosmology and the large-scale structure of the Universe, to quasars and the most distant known galaxies, to clusters and groups of galaxies, down to our own Milky Way, its structure and fascinating contents: pulsars, neutron stars, globular clusters, stars and planets. We also research 3-D visualisation techniques and applications of advanced scientific computing. CAS augments scholarship stipends with AUS$3k per year for both Australian and international PhD students. In addition to their scholarship stipend, students are allocated a research budget to cover computing (e.g. laptop) and travel (e.g. telescope observing, conferences etc.). For details about postgraduate study at CAS, including available supervisors, PhD topics and how to apply, see http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/study/postgradstudy.html The formal application deadline is October 29, 2009. However, an Expression of Interest must first be submitted, and potential applicants must discuss possible PhD projects with possible supervisors well before the deadline. All application materials must reach CAS by October 23, 2009. -- Michael T.
