DATE: Tue, 24 Nov 2009 23:37:34 +1100 SUBJECT: Instrument Scientist, RSAA The Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics at ANU is participating in the international Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) project. This next generation optical-IR telescope will incorporate an advanced Adaptive Optics system with multiple laser guide stars to realise diffraction-limited imaging. The School seeks an Optical Physicist to lead its effort in developing operational AO systems for a variety of applications, including instrumentation for the GMT, for other ground-based telescopes and for space debris monitoring. This position will suit an academic or technical officer with proven expertise and hands-on experience with relevant technologies, including laser systems, deformable mirrors, wavefront measurement, and high-speed digital control electronics, are required. The position is expected to produce conference and seminar papers and publications with occasional contributions to the teaching program. The successful candidate will be creative technologically but will also have demonstrated an ability to work effectively and efficiently in international teams of researchers and engineers, including management of the risks inherent in the development of novel technologies.
