DATE: Tue, 24 Nov 2009 23:37:30 +1100 SUBJECT: SkyMapper Postdoctoral Fellow/Research Fellow The Research School of Astronomy & Astrophysics (RSAA) of the Australian National University in Canberra is seeking to appoint up to four researchers to work on scientific problems related to the photometric and transient surveys of the new SkyMapper telescope. These positions are funded as part of Prof. Brian Schmidt’s Australian Research Council’s Laureate Fellowship. Depending on the qualifications of the candidate, these positions will be offered as fixed-term appointments of 3 or 5 years, and at a level of Postdoctoral fellow, or Research fellow, having a minimum starting salary of AU$68,413 (approx US$59,000) and AU$74,447 (approx US $64,000), respectively. Relocation expenses of the successful candidates will be paid. The appointees are expected to pursue a vigorous, full time, self- directed research program in an area relevant to the SkyMapper telescope, and will be expected to help to contribute to the success of the SkyMapper telescope operations and its corresponding surveys. People with skills in any of the following areas are encouraged to apply. · Large scale photometric surveys · Optical and or radio transient detection · Observational, theoretical, or cosmological studies of supernovae, gamma ray bursts, and other transient objects. · Stellar, Galactic, or Extra-Galactic studies of objects using large photometric datasets. Successful candidates will have access to the SkyMapper 1.3m survey telescope and its corresponding survey datasets, the well-instrumented 2.3m telescope, which is equipped with a new, high-efficiency optical integral field spectrograph (WiFeS)., the world-class ANU super- computing facilities, and to Australia’s other national radio and optical/IR facilities. The successful candidates will have the opportunity to co-supervise graduate students and to apply for additional research funding through the competitive grant schemes of the Australian Research Council.
