Dear Colleagues,

We would like to invite you to attend the Fourth Workshop of the  
Australian National Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (ANITA), to  
be held on the 22nd and 23rd of March 2010 at the Centre for  
Astrophysics and Supercomputing at Swinburne University, Melbourne.

As with previous workshops, the main aims are:

- to provide a review of Theoretical Astrophysics in Australia and a  
platform for current research
- to facilitate collaboration between theorists and observers
- to promote a sense of community among theoretical astrophysicists
- to educate students and enhance their opportunities in the  
Australian and international community

Approximately 20-30 minutes will be allocated for each oral  
presentation. There will be no formal proceedings, but contributions  
will be available on the web after the workshop.

This workshop is sponsored by Swinburne University’s Centre for  
Astrophysics and Supercomputing. Registration is free, and morning and  
afternoon tea will be provided. There will be a dinner on Monday  
evening at a local restaurant, to be paid for on the night.

This workshop will be immediately followed on the 24th by a one day  
workshop on GPU astronomy aimed at both experts and non-experts  
interested in using the proposed gSTAR GPU cluster.

gSTAR GPU Workshop - March 24, Swinburne University

Theoretical astrophysics represents a major research effort in  
Australia, with a growing reliance on High Performance Computing to  
solve some of the most complex problems in astrophysics. The computing  
landscape is rapidly evolving, with a significant shift underway from  
classical CPU-based technologies to GPU technologies. The time is ripe  
for significant investment to take advantage of this new computational  
paradigm, and in December 2009 the AAL selected a proposal for the

GPU Super-computer for Theoretical Astrophysics Research (gSTAR)

for consideration as part of the $10M Investment Plan for EIF-funded  
astronomy infrastructure.

gSTAR will be a next generation GPU-based computing cluster for  
computational astrophysics housed within the Swinburne Center for  
Astrophysics and Supercomputing. The AAL investment will buy the  
Australian astronomy community a ~600 Teraflop machine with 200  
Terabytes of storage to tackle next-generation computational problems  
not possible with existing CPU-only architectures.

In preparation for gSTAR, we invite potential users and other  
interested colleagues to a one day workshop on March 24th at Swinburne  
University. The workshop will have the joint aims of introducing users  
to the GPU architecture, informing the community about the relative  
capabilities, and discussing current and future applications.
