DATE: Wed, 27 Jan 2010 21:11:59 +1100 SUBJECT: Aust/NZ Workshop on SKA Data and Signal Processing, Feb 15th Auckland. Dear Colleague, Please find below an announcement for a 1 day workshop on SKA Data and Signal Processing to be held on Monday 15th of February, 2010 in Auckland. This workshop is particularly focused on Australian and New Zealand interests but is open to all and has been timed to take best advantage to the international participants attending the broader "Pathways to the SKA Science in Australasia" meeting (www.aut.ac.nz/skanz2010) being held from Tuesday to Thursday of the same week at the same campus in Auckland. If you could bring this to the attention of any colleagues who may wish to attend that would be very much appreciated. Aust/NZ Workshop in SKA Data and Signal Processing ---------------------------------------------------------------- The Australian/New Zealand Workshop on SKA Data and Signal Processing provides a forum for the professionals from New Zealand and Australian academia and industry to discuss the issues and challenges in data and signal processing as well as other topics of advanced computing and networking related to the SKA and radio astronomy in general. The workshop aims establishing a framework for New Zealand research and industry in engaging with Australian SKA Research and Development related to data and signal processing. When: 10:00 - 17: 00, February 15, 2010 Where: Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand Web: http://www.ska.ac.nz/events/australia-new-zealand-workshop-on-ska-data-and-signal-processing The format for the workshop will be for presentations in the morning and early afternoon with a brief panel discussion to conclude. Topics include: * Computer architectures for ASKAP and SKA data processing * Peta-scale data intensive research challenges for the SKA * Signal processing and data volume challenges when studying the Universe at high time resolution * Computational challenges in Transient Radio Emission Array Detectors Confirmed speakers include: * Professor Peter Quinn, Director of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research, Western Australia * Professor Steven Tingay, Director, Science and Operations, Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy & Deputy Director of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research * Dr Tim Cornwell, CSIRO Research Program Leader for Software Development & Project Lead and Engineer for computing for the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) * Dr Melanie Johnston-Hollitt, Chair NZ SKA Research and Development Consortium, Leader Radio Astronomy Group Victoria University of Wellington * Dougal Watt, Chair NZ SKA Industry Consortium, Chief Technologist IBM New Zealand * Dr Slava Kitaev, Director of Centre for Reconfigurable Systems, Auckland University of Technology The meeting is generously sponsored by the New Zealand Foundation for Research, Science & Technology and registration has been waived, however participants are asked to indicate their attendance by Monday 8th of February for catering purposes. The workshop will be available in live video via the Internet. Interactive participation, and if required presentations, via the Internet will be also available for people not able to attend in person.
