27 Jun 1998: Feast of tries

Manly have won their first away game of the season, defeating Western Suburbs 45-30 earlier this afternoon. The Sea Eagles were brilliant in the first half, leading 28-0 at the break after scoring five tries. Incredibly, the team which has been so ridden with mistakes in recent weeks made just a single handling error in the first 40 minutes, ending up with a whopping 75% of possession.

The second-half saw a more spirited effort from the Magpies and several defensive lapses from Manly. While Wests were never in the game, they easily outplayed the Eagles in the second half to score five tries to three.

Best for Manly was probably Luke Phillips who, playing five-eighth for most of the game, directed play well and scored 21 points. Geoff Toovey, Nik Kosef and Neil Tierney also played strongly, while Craig Field scored a try and set up two others in his time on the field.

Manly have now put together back-to-back wins against lowly-ranked sides. The real test of their finals aspirations comes next Sunday, however, when they face St George at Brookvale Oval.

26 Jun 1998: Kosef back

Nik Kosef returns from a two-match suspension tomorrow, and will play his 100th first grade game for the Sea Eagles. This brings Manly back to full-strength - expectations are that they should win comfortably. Teams are:

Western Suburbs: Leeds (c), Fisher, Kevin McGuinness, Ken McGuinness, Mills, Kennedy, Hodgson, Georgallis, Coxon, Raudonikis, Howard, Mescia, Fritz. Res: Pomery, Yates, Willis, Laing.

Manly-Warringah: Hancock, Phillips, Hopoate, Hill, Torrens, Field, Toovey (c), Kosef, Gartner, Menzies, Colella, Serdaris, Tierney. Res: Duncan, Lyons, Taylor, Peters, Browne.

FootyTAB: Wests +12.5

21 Jun 1998: Scratchy win

Manly finally have a win under their belts, beating Penrith 22-4 earlier today at Brookvale. With Kosef out through suspension and Phillips on the bench with an ear injury, Manly started with Field at half, Lyons at five-eighth and Toovey at hooker. It was a great effort from Tooves just to take the field, after missing Origin III on Friday night because of the flu.

Although easy winners, the Eagles were unfortunately impressive only in brief patches, as in other recent efforts. The first 10 minutes were superb, Daniel Gartner and Albert Torrens both scoring great tries. The latter came from a clever cross-field bomb from Luke Phillips, and then some spectacular acrobatics from Steve Menzies to bat the ball to Torrens for the try. Two woeful attempts at conversion from Craig Field saw Manly lead 8-0 at the break.

In the second half things become catatonic, with a series of handling errors from both sides threatening to turn the game into a farce. The spark was put back into Manly with a great try to Geoff Toovey, but Penrith hit back to leave things at 12-4. Two late tries, both engineered through the mastery of Cliff Lyons, put the result beyond doubt to give Manly a healthy, but far-from-convincing win. There were several stand-out players: Anthony Colella and Neil Tierney were both superb at the front, Tierney producing some fabulous off-loads worthy of Ian Roberts or Noel Cleal. John Hopoate also had a great game, as did Craig Hancock and Geoff Toovey. Alf Duncan also continues to impress.

The win leaves Manly in 15th spot, still six points out of the top ten. The Eagles have to win almost all of their remaining games to make the finals, starting with Western Suburbs out at Campbelltown on Saturday afternoon.

18 Jun 1998: Kosef suspended

Nik Kosef has been suspended by the NRL for two weeks for a dangerous tackle in the game against Parramatta. He will miss Friday night's third and deciding State of Origin game, as well as Sunday's game against Penrith. Neil Tierney was not called before the judiciary, despite being reported for the same tackle.

Craig Field is back in the starting line-up for Sunday. Teams are:

Manly: Phillips, Hancock, Duncan, Hill, Torrens, Field, Toovey (c), Colella, Hopoate, Menzies, Gartner, Serdaris, Tierney. Res: Lyons, Taylor, Peters, Browne.

Penrith: Jorgensen, Hicks, Woods, Domic, Beckett, Wise, Drew, Cross, Gall, MacGillivray, Puletua, Boyd, Geyer. Res: MacNamara, Hopkins, Thompson, Elvy.

FootyTAB: Penrith +6.5

14 Jun 1998: Another late charge

Another improved second-half performance from the Sea Eagles saw them go down 17-14 to Parramatta last night, after trailing 15-2 at half-time. The Eagles' mistake rate was again high, but their defence is showing improvement. Neil Tierney and Nik Kosef were reported for a dangerous tackle late in the first half.

Next Sunday Manly play Penrith at Brookvale.

10 Jun 1998: Phillips out

Luke Phillips suffered another injury on Monday, and will miss Saturday's game against Parramatta. He is replaced in the side by goal-kicking winger Alf Duncan. In representative news, Terry Hill and Geoff Toovey are both in the NSW side for Origin III, while Nik Kosef and Steve Menzies have been named on the bench.

Teams for Saturday night:

Parramatta: Schifcofske, Carige, Barnes, Kelly, Whereat, Bell, Penna, Dymock, Hindmarsh, McCracken, Cayless, Crouch, Pay. Res: Simon, Horsnell, Vella, Weston, Troy (one to be omitted).

Manly: Hancock, Duncan, Hopoate, Hill, Torrens, Lyons, Toovey (c), Kosef, Gartner, Menzies, Colella, Serdaris, Tierney. Res: Field, Browne, Peters, Taylor, Hunter (one to be omitted).

FootyTAB: Manly +8.5

09 Jun 1998: Manly in a muddle

Manly put in a performance devoid of skill or competence at Brookvale yesterday, losing to Canberra 24-12. A woeful effort from both sides saw Canberra ahead 8-0 at half-time through two freakish tries. The injection of Craig Field into the game saw Manly improve in the second half, clawing their way back to trail 14-12. But as in other recent games, soft defence saw the opposition rack up a couple of late tries to settle the matter. Anthony Colella and Craig Field were both brilliant, but the rest of the side looked very ordinary. Manly have an away game against Parramatta on Saturday night.

Last week Manly were thrashed 28-2 by Canterbury, in another dismal effort.
