The Australian Premiership Competition

Two rival competitions took place in 1997, the 12-team Australian Rugby League (ARL) and the 10-team Super League. Newcastle narrowly defeated Manly in the ARL Premiership, while Brisbane beat Cronulla for the Super League title.

In 1998, Super League and the ARL merged to form the National Rugby League Championship. This new competition consists of 20 teams - 11 from Sydney, and one each from Newcastle, Wollongong, Canberra, Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, Townsville, Auckland and the Gold Coast. South Queensland, Perth and the Hunter have all been excluded from the competition.

See the NRL Official Site for more information.
