Hi, my name is Chris Hales and I am a PhD candidate in astrophysics
at the Sydney Institute for Astronomy within the
School of Physics at
The University of Sydney, and at
CSIRO's Australia
Telescope National Facility.
How did galaxies like our own Milky Way come to be suffused with tenuous large-scale magnetic fields?
My research aims to answer this question by probing for even larger-scale "seed" magnetic
fields, which are thought to exist in the depths of intergalactic space and get "wound-up"
into galaxies. By examining many distant galaxies through the radio-frequency equivalent of
polarised sunglasses, it is possible to wipe out their radio glare and reveal these seed
magnetic fields pervading the Universe.
I also enjoy teaching. This semester I am a tutor for
PHYS1500,
a first year course in astronomy.
