Mechanics Conceptions - 2007
(1) What is the study about?
This study is about student conceptions of classical mechanics. We are investigating ways in which multimedia methods can be used to change your conceptions about Newtonian mechanics.
(2) Who is carrying out the study?
The study is being conducted by Derek Muller under the supervision of Dr. Manjula Sharma, Senior Lecturer of physics and head of the Sydney University Physics Education Research group.
(3) What does the study involve?
This part of the study involves watching a short multimedia clip and filling out a short survey on classical mechanics by introductory physics students.
(4) How much time will the study take?
The study will take forty-five minutes maximum.
(5) Can I withdraw from the study?
Being in this study is completely voluntary - you are not under any obligation to consent. If you do not wish to participate, simply fill in your SID, course code and password and click submit.
(6) Will anyone else know the results?
All aspects of the study, including results, will be strictly confidential and only the researchers will have access to information on participants. You will receive a score for your post-quiz answers. Only you will know this result. A report of the study may be submitted for publication, but individual participants will not be identifiable in such a report.
(7) Will the study benefit me?
Completing this survey will give you an opportunity to reflect on some important fundamental physics ideas. The multimedia treatment may help you learn or think about the physics. Also, if you are interested in discussing the results of the study, you are invited to do so. The contact information of the researcher is given below.
(8) Can I tell other people about the study?
Yes, by all means. There is no reason to keep this study a secret. However, please do not discuss the multimedia or questions with other students before they have participated themselves.
(9) What if I require further information?
When you have read this information, feel free to contact Derek Muller with any questions you may have by email at muller@physics.usyd.edu.au, or by phone on (02) 9351 2553. Alternatively, Derek can be contacted in person in room 233A in the Physics Building.
(10) What if I have a complaint or concerns?
Any person with concerns or complaints about the conduct of a research study
can contact the Manager, Ethics Administration, University of Sydney on (02) 9351 4811.
