• Free software that I use and can recommend:
• Thunderbird - e-mail client
• JEdit - text editor
• Roboform - web form filler (shareware version has more features)
  
• Irfanview - image viewer
• FinePrint - print multi-up and double-sided, even on printers that do not support this (you are prompted to remove and replace sheets) - preview everything before printing (this is not free, but is great value - save about 50% on paper)
• CutePDF - a PDF virtual printer that creates a PDF file from the document 'printed' on it
