Heidelberg: Day 1
28/8/07
Here is a collection of photos from my first day wandering in
Heidelberg.
I arrived at about 9:30am but couldn't get keys to the Guest House until
11am so we (me and two American guys I met on the Airport Shuttle -- Greg and Ben -- who are here for the Summer School as well) went wandering for a couple of hours to get ourselves oriented and keep ourselves awake so we could get over our jetlag with a good night's sleep tonight!
Okay then, here are the pics:
The Neckar
River.
Heidelberg is built along a section of the Neckar river which joins
the Rhine at Mannheim, 20 kilometers or so Northwest of
Heidelberg.
This photo looks down toward to "old city" of Heidelberg.
The old city.
This is the main street running through the old city. It's full of
shops and shoppers as you can see!
Plenty of tourists too, so we
didn't feel too out of place taking HEAPS of photos..
The old
city 2, and 3.
A bit further down the same street. Amazing buildings everywhere!
Starbucks.
Of course you can't find a
city anywhere without a Starbucks these days. At least they left the
beautifully carved corner piece alone..
Horrible that they can do that
to such a great old building.
A beautiful cathedral.
With a sex shop right outside! I wonder how the parishoners feel about
this? Here's another shot of the intricate stonework on
the front of it (the cathedral that is).
Whereas this 12th Century "castle" has markets surrounding
it on Saturdays and Sundays apparently.
Looks like they get down there
on Tuesdays too!
This one I had to take a photo of :-}
And here are two shots of the 11th Century (proper) castle
that we will be having a tour of on the weekend. Cool...
This I just had to take a photo of, for those who
I know will appreciate it!
Okay, that's it from me for today.
I'm tired and have to sleep. Will play with this more tomorrow.
