Heidelberg: Day 2
29/8/07
8am
Just got up and am about to go in search of brekky and take a few
pics.
I'll put them up as soon as I have some!
The School starts at 2pm today so I won't have a huge amount of time
to devote to this page. I still hope to get all my pics up each day though!
1:30pm
Found the cheap student food outlet at the main campus and had
brekky/lunch after I finished reading my book. Met two other guys
(from Brazil and Trinidad(?)) and had lunch with them.
Welcome and first lectures start in about half an hour so I won't have
time to take any pictures until later tonight.
6pm
Just finished the first day of lectures and it was really interesting
(I'm not sure if I'm surprised or not but anyway)! We are about to go
to a pub for dinner and a few beers now. We were recommended a pub
(the Destille) by a local in the shuttle bus on the way here from the
airport, so we thought we'd check it out. Do we really look that much
like alcoholics that the first local we meet tells us which pubs to go
to? :-}
For those of you who know Nicolas Martin, his talk here is on Tuesday
so I'll meet him then if I can't get up to MPIA before that.
Okay, just had dinner at the Lowenbrau and a few beers at Destille
(which has an Absinthe bar across the road from it, which we
avoided).
Here are the photos from tonight.
New
friends.
From left to right this is: Sergio (University of Sao Paulo), Donatas
(Lithuanian Institute of
Physics), Ben (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) and Greg (John
Hopkins University). The last two guys are the Americans I mentioned
yesterday. We're in the old city again, on our way to dinner.
More
of the old city.
The
Lowenbrau.
Where we had dinner, right in the heart of the old
city. Beautiful!
Not SO great for vegetarians but I managed to get something to eat...
Something to eat!
This is what they told me was gnocci.
And no doubt that's exactly what it is. I REALLY wasn't expecting it
to be deep fried though!
Destille.
At Destille.
Again from left to right we have: Greg, Oscar (alsofrom the University
of Sao Paulo), Ben, Soobash (Mauritius
University) and Sergio. Sergio doesn't drink though, that's my bier he's
holding..
I LOVE Deutsch bier!!
And so we come to the end of another day..
G'night!
