Heidelberg: Day 3
30/8/07
Okay, I'm back after much craziness (mainly to do with the Summer
School lectures which are coming thick and fast!) and ready to put up
some more pics, although I may not get them all up right now, it's
nearly dinner time!
Here
we begin with the tour of the Max Planck Institute for Astonomy.
Our guide (or one of them) is telling us about the Large Binocular
Telescope (which is still being constructed, although one of the two
mirrors has been completed and has achieved first light). The MPIA has
a lot to do with the instrumentation for the 'scope, mainly LUCIFER
(an acronym for something but I'm not sure what, but it's a great
acronym anyway!) See this pic for a
shot of this instrument under construction in the "clean room". We
could only look through the window so this is a shot through the window.
One of
the old observatory buildings at MPIA.
There
are several of these!
Of course there are! Most of you know of my (mild?) obsession with
observatories!
See what I mean?
:-}
Maybe this should be the last one I put up here?
But it probably won't be..
Not by a long shot..
Here Greg is taking a picture of me and a girl from the School taking
pics of the building he's standing in from of.
But you have to admit.
They are worth taking photos of.
I'll stop at this one.
But I've got PLENTY more!
Sunset from the roof of MPIA.
The people in the foreground are students from the School.
Sunset from the roof of MPIA #2.
Sunset from the roof of MPIA #3.
No people in the foreground this time, but what a great sunset! You
can just see a bit of Heidelberg to the right of the trees.
Here is a panaorama of Heidelberg from the roof of the MPIA just after sunset.
One of these days I'll stitch the photos together to make a single
panoramic shot. Right now I don't have time!
This is a close up of the power station you can
see in one of the panorama shots.
The reason for this one is that if you look in this direction you can
see France, at about the distance to the mountains that you see here!
And just because it's beautiful, another sunset shot.
Again from the roof of the MPIA.
Okay, that's it from me for another day. I know iI'm a bit behind with
the updates but I've been a bit busy to keep on top of it..
I'll get days 4, 5, 6 and 7 up soon!
