Summary:Matt Ryan was the inaugural University of Sydney Science Teacher
Fellow in 2003, an award which recognised his enthusiasm, commitment
and creativity in using radio science as a tool to give students new
ways of looking at the world. The Fellowship provides a year's salary
to allow the teacher to relinquish teaching duties and pursue a
teaching-related project of their own design. Matt's project was to
build a radio observatory and space communications facility for use by
school students of all ages, but particularly high school students of
physics. He called it 'The Schools in Space Project' and his goal was
to 'set young minds alive, thinking about... our place in the universe
and stimulating interest in possible careers in science'.

Amongst the projects completed during his Fellowship were the
detection of meteor trails, reception and interpretation of weather
satellite data, and instrumentation to enable voice contact with
astronauts on the International Space Station. A physics and general
science teacher for 16 years, Matt Ryan is constantly looking for new
ways to engage students' interest. His HSC results are astoundingly
good for a non-selective high school (Brigidine College, Randwick),
and can be attributed directly to the creative energy he invests in
teaching and the close rapport he develops with students.
