User Account Policy

Reviewed by: Physics IT Policy Committee, currently under review.

The School of Physics runs a centralised network of Linux computers. The network is designed as a tool for the School’s staff, students and visitors. All computers maintained by Physics Support can be accessed with the same Physics user account as well as all user network services.

Requesting an Account

An account can only be requested by a member of staff through the use of the Physics New User Account request form (www.physics.usyd.edu.au/itsupport). The owner of the account must then see a PITS staff member to enable the account.

Responsibility for an account

The owner of the account is responsible for:

·        Security of the Account’s password (passwords are not to be shared or given away etc).  Password must be:

>12 characters

>1 upper case letters

>1 lower case letters

>1 numbers

>1 special characters

·        The use of their account (inappropriate use of the account will result in the account being locked), this includes content found in the account. You are expected (within reason) to confine your use of the account to Physics related or University related tasks.

The School reserves the right to lock a user’s account without notice if the account is found to have been hacked, used inappropriately or its expiry date has been reached.
