[ASA] ASA Prize Winners 2023

The ASA is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2023 ASA Awards.


*Bok Prize for outstanding research in astronomy by an Honours or eligible
Masters student*
Awarded to William McDonald for his thesis “Dissociation of Dark Matter and
Gas in Cosmic Large-scale Structure”. William completed his Masters
research at the University of Western Australia, supervised by Danail
Obreschkow and Lillian Garratt-Smithson.



Honourable mentions were also awarded to:


   - Hank Hua (ANU) for his thesis “Neutron Star Physics from Gravitational
   Waves with Third Generation Detectors” supervised by Karl Wette and Susan
   Scott.
   - Ashna Gulati (Sydney) for her thesis “Exploring Classical Novae with
   ASKAP” supervised by Tara Murphy.


*Charlene Heisler Prize for the most outstanding PhD thesis in astronomy*
Awarded to Dr Piyush Sharda for his thesis “The role of metals from
molecular clouds to galactic discs” completed at the Australian National
University and supervised by Mark Krumholz.



In addition, Dr Isobel Romero-Shaw receives an Honourable Mention for her
thesis “Eccentricity in Gravitational-wave Transients –measurements and
implications” completed at Monash University and supervised by Paul Lasky
and Eric Thrane.


*Louise Webster Prize for outstanding research by a scientist early in
their post-doctoral career*
This year we have the fabulous result of awarding *two joint winners:*




   - Dr Nichole Barry (Curtin) for the paper ‘Improving the Epoch of
   Reionization Power Spectrum Results from MWA Season 1 Observations’ Barry,
   et. al. (2019b) ApJ, 884, 1


   - Dr Sven Buder (ANU) for the paper ‘The GALAH+ survey: third data
   release’ Buder et al. (2021) MNRAS, 506, 150



*Anne Green Prize for outstanding research by a mid-career researcher*

Awarded to A/Prof Michelle Cluver for her work with surveys such as WISE
and 4MOST and her expertise in galaxy evolution.



*Emerging Leaders in Astronomy Software Development Prize*

This new prize sponsored by the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) is
awarded to Dr Manodeep Sinha for CORRFUNC an open-source high-performance
code to compute correlation functions extremely quickly



*Certificate of Appreciation*

The ASA awarded a certificate of Appreciation to Associate Member Mr Terry
Cuttle for his outstanding achievements in education, outreach and
publicity of the 2023 Total Solar Eclipse.


Congratulations to all our prize winners!


The nominations received for the prizes were, once again, of a very high
standard and a credit to their institutions. It shows that there is great
breadth and strength in Australian astronomy.

Many thanks to all our judges for devoting a considerable amount of their
time to reading and reviewing all of the entries.
