Motion in non-uniform magnetic fields

Often the magnetic field in a plasma varies with position or time, causing the plasma particles to drift, change their perpendicular kinetic energy, and sometimes to be energized as a result. First consider the effects of a gradient in magnetic field strength that is perpendicular to ${\bf B}$.
